Joinery Linseed Oil Dipping and Treatment
Home Building Joinery Blacksmiths Plumbing About Us

To finish and protect our joinery products we primarily use linseed oil or linseed oil based paints. Linseed oil paints are inexpensive and large areas can be treated with only a small amount of paint. The paint has been used since the 1700s and has a range of applications.

The oil we use is 100% natural linseed oil and contains no solvents. The only addition made to the paints used are metal oxide pigments and are completely free from the petrochemicals found in most paints.

The lack of petrochemicals means that there is no unpleasant odour, the paint can easily be removed from hands by washing in water and to thin the paint only requires the application of heat.

Linseed oil paint allows wood to breath and so wood does not rot under the paint. Linseed oil paint does not crack or flake like modern paints and soaks through the surface of wood which both help inhibit water ingress and decay.

After linseed oil painting treatment wood may not need repainting for up to fifteen years, three times longer than modern paints. When it is time for repainting, linseed oil paint can be applied on top of the previous coat with no paint removal necessary

Linseed oil paint fades over time but can be easily rejuvenated with a coat of linseed maintenance oil recommended after six or seven years from initial treatment.

For linseed oil treatment we have our own oil dipping facilities by our joinery workshop capable of accommodating most sizes of window and door frames. We have used linseed oil treatment for years and have a great deal of experience in its use and applications.
